Sumumini, Vanimo – 2 February 2025 : A significant milestone was achieved today as the community of Sumumini in Vanimo, Sandaun Province, gathered to witness the groundbreaking ceremony for the much-anticipated Sumumini Adventist Junior High School. The event, attended by key stakeholders and local leaders, marks the beginning of an educational journey that promises to uplift the region’s youth and foster development within the province.

The ceremony began with heartfelt apologies extended to notable figures who were unable to attend due to prior commitments. These included Governor Hon. Tony Wauwau, Hon. Belden Namah MP and Minister for Tourism, and Provincial Education Advisor Mr. Hillary Suambau. Their absence was acknowledged with gratitude for their ongoing support and contributions to the project.

Dignitaries present at the occasion included District Administrator and Chairman of the Project Development Board, Mr. Kida Ambakua; Executive Officer to the Member of Vanimo Green, Mr. Martin Mopa; District Education Manager for Vanimo Green, Mr. Jack Nawiap; and staff from the Provincial Division of Education led by Mr. Tommy Amilawan. Also in attendance were company development partners from Amanab 56, represented by Mr. Peter Wuni, and Papua Mission Representative Elder John Sawaki. Local leadership was strongly represented by Jacob Yani, Village Chief of Sumumini, along with village elders, church members, and leaders of the Vanimo Green region.

The event was skillfully coordinated by Master of Ceremony Jim Sumo, who ensured a seamless program. Special thanks were extended to the AYM department for providing a guard of honor to welcome delegates to the stage, setting a tone of respect and unity for the occasion.

The first phase of the project has already commenced, with land clearance currently underway. According to Mr. Lancedown Wirise, Adventist Education Director for the Sepik Mission, plans are now set for the second phase, which involves constructing classrooms and other essential facilities. “This school is a testament to our commitment to providing quality education in rural areas,” said Mr. Wirise in an interview. He further announced that classes would commence next year, with the school initially enrolling students in Grades 7 and 9.

As shovels hit the soil amidst cheers and applause, it became evident that the Sumumini Adventist Junior High School represents more than just another school—it symbolizes hope, progress, and a brighter tomorrow for generations to come. This initiative underscores the power of partnerships and collaborative efforts moving forward, as local communities, government bodies, and private stakeholders unite to create lasting change.

With construction set to continue over the coming months, all eyes remain on Sumumini as it prepares to welcome its first cohort of students in 2026.
